Bangladesh Lynching Case: In Bangladesh, the violence that erupted after the death of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi is targeting the minority Hindu community. On Thursday, in Mymensingh city, a mob beat 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das to death on charges of blasphemy and then set his body on fire. The interim government of Mohammad Yunus has expressed regret over the incident and promised to apprehend the culprits. However, this seems to be mere rhetoric, as Dipu’s family has received no assurance from the government.
Ravilal Das, Dipu’s father, who witnessed his son’s brutal lynching, said he is completely disillusioned with the government’s attitude. Ravilal says that the government has given him no assurance. No senior leader or official has said anything. This has only added to his grief. He said that no top leader has contacted him so far.
Learned about his son’s death on Facebook:
Ravilal says that the administration didn’t even inform him about his son’s death. He first learned about his son’s death on Facebook. The interim government of Bangladesh has ordered an investigation into the matter, but Ravilal currently has little hope from the government.
Ravilal said, “First, we heard things on Facebook. We only learned the truth when someone told me that he had been severely beaten. Half an hour later, my uncle came and told me that they had taken my son, tied him to a tree, and burned him.”
Ravilal is not in a position to say clearly which organization the people who killed Dipu belonged to. He said, “We don’t know for sure yet whether the people responsible were from Jamaat-e-Islami or its affiliated student wing, Chhatra Shibir. We can’t say for sure; people are just talking.”
Dipu worked in a factory:
Dipu Chandra Das worked in a garment factory. On Thursday night in Mymensingh, a mob brutally beat and killed a man named Dipu for allegedly insulting Islam. After his death, the mob tied his body to a tree and set it on fire. Dozens of people watched this act of barbarity in silence.
